Evening Certificate Program

    Video of Instructor Stefan Doering

If you have an interest in conservation—either professionally or civically—the CERC Certificate in Conservation Biology offers a unique opportunity to study with conservation experts. You will gain a foundation in conservation science and policy, learn how to critically evaluate scientific findings and media reports, and master practical techniques that will allow you to participate in "citizen science" or more formal research.

A Schedule That Fits Yours

Students complete 12 courses to earn a Columbia University Certificate in Conservation Biology. Each course is five weeks long and meets once a week on weekday evenings from 6:10 p.m. to 8:10 p.m. Students can complete the program in as little as two semesters or as many as three years. We offer about 12 courses each academic semester at Columbia University and additional intensive field courses at field sites during the winter and summer breaks. Students must enroll in at least two courses per semester in order to maintain standing and complete the program within three years.

Specialization in Economics, Management, and Finance of Environmental Conservation (EMF)

Qualified students in the program may pursue a curricular track that focuses on the application of economic theory and financial tools to conservation problems.  Qualifications for the EMF track are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
